ASDAN

Years 11-13 (and Y10 on approval of HOD)

The ASDAN programme is designed to develop, support and accredit life skills for a variety of learners in different contexts. It is designed to create opportunities and develop personal and social development as well as to enhance self-esteem. Students are offered a variety of learner-centred, activity-based challenges within a variety of educational, community and world of work contexts. The programme is tailored to each individual’s needs.

ASDAN is a curriculum enrichment programme which will enable young people to understand themselves and others better and to become better prepared for making the transition to adult life. It involves self management and competitive skills, work and study skills as well as problem solving skills.  Students, over the duration of the school year, build up a portfolio of work which is then assessed. ASDAN is a NZQA-approved course and offers credit inclusions.

Credit inclusion is a system where students complete a programme of work (to a required standard) over the school year. On completion of the work, students are awarded up to 20 credits at either Levels 1, 2 or 3.  Credit inclusion is unique because these credits are awarded only if the student requires them to achieve  their NZQA qualification at that level. It could be regarded a little like a safety net in addition to developing life skills as mentioned earlier.

For example (assuming successful completion of the ASDAN programme):
Let us presume at the end of the year -

  1. Student A totals up all her credits from her other subjects (excluding ASDAN) and has a total of 62 credits at Level 1. Student A will be awarded the 20 credits from ASDAN bringing the total to 82 credits. Student A now has the 80+ credits required at Level 1 and is awarded NCEA Level 1.
  2. Student B totals up all her credits from her other subjects (excluding ASDAN) and has a total of 75 credits at Level 1. Student A will be awarded 8 credits from ASDAN bringing the total to 83 credits. Student B now has the 80+ credits required at Level 1 and is awarded NCEA Level 1.
  3. Student C does not do ASDAN but chooses another subject which she has found challenging. She totals up all her credits and gains a total of 78 credits at Level 1. Student C has not gained the 80 credits required at Level 1 and cannot be awarded NCEA Level 1.

Credit inclusion is granted for demonstration of the three essential skills of:
•    Self management and competitive skills and the challenges (12 credit equivalents)
•    Work and study skills (4 credit equivalents)
•    Problem solving (4 credit equivalents)
This makes the total of 20 credit equivalents at Level 1, 2 or 3.
