Student and Parent Information

Expectations Of Behaviour

The overall expectation is that each student will behave in a way, which does not infringe on the dignity and learning opportunities of others. Respect for self and respect for others are the basic guidelines emphasised within the College. All forms of bullying will be dealt with severely. No student shall interfere with the learning of other students. The ‘Fair Rule’ is in place to ensure that this does not happen. An explanation of the ‘Fair Rule’ is published in every classroom.

Respect for others includes:

  • their good name
  • their feelings
  • their way of doing things
  • their property
  • their beliefs
  • their learning environment

Respect for yourself includes:

  • the way you dress
  • the way you conduct yourself
  • the way you work
  • the way you accept advice
  • keeping your commitments
  • the way you enter into the life of the school

Respect for the physical environment, buildings and grounds of the College.

  • When wearing their school uniform during the school day, in public places, at school related outside events or whilst representing the school, students are forbidden
  • To carry or use illegal drugs including alcohol and cigarettes. Those who are in the company of students using illegal drugs will incur serious consequences.
  • To chew gum
  • To carry matches, lighters, knives or any offensive item.

Infringement of any part of these guidelines may result in being Stood Down, being put on to an after school detention for serious offences, or a lunchtime detention for lesser infringements. If students wish to discuss any of these sanctions they should make an appointment to see their Dean or a Deputy Principal.

Absence

If a student is absent, a parent or guardian must either:

  • Call the School Office 486 1132, press option one and leave a message
  • Use Schoollinks before 9.00am - please click here for information about Schoollinks
  • Email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it before 8.30am.
  • Absence Officer This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it 486 1132 ext:716

As the teaching day begins at 8.45am your daughter needs to be at school and ready for class by 8.40am. If your daughter is persistently late, she may be asked to make up the missed time during her lunch break.

Students will be required to bring a note from Parent/Caregiver to the School Office when they return.

Attendance At Classes

Students are expected to attend all timetabled classes and to conduct themselves in a manner conducive to effective learning. All students are expected to complete all homework, assignments and assessment pieces and to revise their lessons regularly. Students may be referred to a member of the Senior Management Team’s office for disruptive, uncooperative and/or ‘nuisance value’ classroom behaviour.
Except in exceptional circumstances students will not be given permission to leave their timetabled classes. Please ensure that you use the toilets during your break times.

Bus Procedures

All students using school buses are under the leadership of Senior students. At 3.15 pm students are to wait on the top court (with the exception of those students whose bus stops across Shakespeare Road) until the duty teacher calls the bus line. Any student who joins the line must go to the back. When called, the students are to move in an orderly line to the bus. Whilst waiting to board the bus students must stay in their line alongside the loading bus. Students are reminded that good standards of behaviour are expected on all buses.

To access bus times please go to www.maxx.co.nz and select ‘school buses’ only by unticking the other options.

Cellphones

Students are permitted to have cellphones at school. They must remain switched off in class unless the classroom teacher gives specific permission for phones to be used. Any phone used without permission in class will be confiscated and will be able to be picked up by a parent between 8.30am-4.00pm at the School Office.

Inappropriate use of cellphones before school, at interval or lunchtime will be dealt with severely and may be referred to the Police.
The College takes no responsibility for, or will not spend time investigating lost or stolen phones. Students will be expected to take care of their own cellphones.

Concerns And Complaints – Advice To Students

Problems are always best dealt with quickly and directly SO talk to the teacher concerned, explain your concern reasonably and try to resolve it. You might have to listen too! Here are some guidelines if you feel an issue is not being resolved.

For concerns with...

  • Curriculum, subject concerns, personal > Your Form Teacher
  • Curriculum, subject concerns, personal relationships, bullying > Your Dean
  • Assessment, curriculum, subjects > The Head of Department
  • Personal issues, relationships, bullying, family or other general concerns > The Guidance Counsellor
  • School organisation and structures and issues not resolved with those above > The Principal, Deputy Principals or Assistant Principal
  • Assessment Issues > follow guidelines in Senior Course Booklet
  • Bullying (1) > Dean, Guidance Counsellor
  • Teachers > Deputy Principals, Assistant Principal
  • Harassment (2) > Guidance Counsellor
  1. Bullying is any behaviour that deliberately makes you feel unhappy. It usually happens more than once. It can be physical, verbal, written or indirect (e.g. leaving you out, spreading nasty stories etc).
  2. Sexual or racial harassment is any unwanted or offensive attention, action or remarks of a sexual or racial nature, especially when repeated after a request to stop.

How to make the complaint:

Choose someone who you trust.

If your concern is of sexual or racial harassment you should go to the Guidance Counsellor. If you’re not happy with the resolution of the complaint you made, make a written formal complaint addressed to the Principal. She will discuss it with you and anyone else concerned, taking details in writing before resolving the complaint with you.

A very serious complaint about the management of the school can be addressed in writing to the Chairperson of the Board of Trustees and given to the school office. The Board will then investigate it, in consultation with the school’s senior administration. After the resolution the Board will send you a written response.

The Fair Rule

As a student at Carmel College you have the right to work and learn to the best of your ability and to be free from disruptions. Your teachers also have the right to teach without being interrupted so that all students can experience academic success.

To make sure that all students are able to learn to the best of their ability the following rules apply to ALL students at Carmel College.

  1. Follow directions
  2. Be in class on time
  3. Come prepared for lessons with necessary and appropriate gear
  4. Listen to others and speak in turn
  5. No ‘put downs’ or swearing
  6. Respect the personal space and property of others

These rules will be displayed in all classrooms to remind you what is expected of you.

If you break the Fair Rule:

  1. Your teacher will write your name on the board or give you a verbal warning. This lets you know you should stop the unfair behaviour, without argument.
  2. If you continue with the unfair behaviour, your teacher will put a cross beside your name or give you a second verbal warning. This lets you know you should stop the unfair behaviour, without argument, and stay behind at the end of the period to talk to the teacher.
  3. If you still continue with the unfair behaviour, despite two warnings, the teacher will give you a Time Out Card and send you to the School Office, where you will stay for the rest of the period. If you are sent to Time Out, the Dean will contact your parents.

REMEMBER: Classroom learning = Life chances.

You do not have the right to steal the life chances of other students by unfair or disruptive behaviour.
