Model United Nations Assembly Experience

Model United Nations Assembly (MUNA) is a dynamic educational simulation that gives students the opportunity to role-play as delegates to the United Nations, tackling real-world global issues through debate. This year, Carmel College entered both a Year 13 and a Year 12 team. The Year 13 team—Alice Finlayson, Angela Braganza, and Kriya D’Sa—represented Vietnam and eloquently addressed two key remits:

  • That the World Trade Organisation be granted the authority to prosecute and enforce countries pursuing exploitative trade practices.
  • That developed nations be required to pay climate reparations to developing countries most affected by climate change.

The Year 12 team, made up of Gigi Albrecht, Romy Lee, and Zoya Wamoto, represented Switzerland and contributed thoughtful arguments on the following topics:

  • That the use of artificial intelligence for autonomous weapons and mass surveillance be prohibited under international law.
  • That access to the internet be recognised as a universal human right, protected and upheld by all member states.

MUNA was an incredible experience that allowed us to make friends with students from across the North Island, deepen our understanding of global issues, and strengthen skills such as public speaking, critical thinking, and negotiation. It was a super fun event, and we highly encourage other students to take advantage of this unique and valuable opportunity in the future.
