Over 80% of our Year 11-13 students participated in voluntary community service this year – and they were so keen that almost half of them handed in their journal early.
At a minimum of 20 hours each, that’s at least 680 hours of community service effort – the real total is much higher as most students form a personal commitment to their chosen actions and do more than the target. Some students choose to also log their hours through Student Volunteer Army.
This year 69 Carmel students have already been awarded their SVA Bronze pin for 35+ hours, 11 students have received the Silver pin for 250+ hours – and we have 4 amazing Gold level achievers (over 500 hours)
What does this mean?
Our students are contributing massively in their chosen communities – through coaching in every imaginable sporting code, club support, first aiding, surf lifesaving, tutoring others, working in opshops, caring for elderly neighbours and younger students, participating in ecological actions and fundraising for a huge variety of charities.
They are developing a sense of themselves as essential parts of a thriving community.
In their own words:
…I felt that I was growing closer towards God and living out the Gospel when I helped others who may be vulnerable or have special needs
…I was reminded that we are all connected, and small acts of kindness can really go far in someone’s day
…This experience taught me patience and understanding, especially when challenges arose, and I was grateful for the guidance of older volunteers
… Overall, it was a valuable year of growth and connection
….no matter how small the problem is you should still try to help
… life is worth value simply because we are all children of God. That is what I want to stand for by doing my service.
Inspired by this great example, Year 7-10 students continue to serve, with their journal due early in Term 4.
