On Tuesday 21st November, the Year 12 cohort had the incredible opportunity to visit multiple religious communities all over Auckland. This trip allowed them to learn first-hand about religions they had been studying in the World Religions topic.
The day began with a visit from Buddhist Monk, Phramaha Somkid Howhan, at Carmel College. He shared the core principles of Buddhism, and led meditation for the year group. The Year 12s were able to learn the importance of mindfulness and meditation within Buddhism.
Following this, we visited the Hindu Bharatiya Mandir in Sandringham. This stop allowed students to learn about Hindu gods and traditions, we were lucky enough to visit on Diwali, which allowed for further insight and learning.
The Ponsonby Masjid was the next stop on the trip. Here the students were invited to remove their shoes and cover their heads out of respect. Students learned about the 5 pillars of Islamic life and were able to ask questions, forming a deeper understanding.
A packed lunch was shared in St Patrick’s square, and was followed by a visit to St Patrick’s Cathedral. Students were able to ask questions, make links between religions, and explore the Cathedral.
Overall, the World Religions Trip is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that is truly eye-opening for students. Our Year 12s were able to see the rich diversity of Auckland and appreciate each religion for its beauty.
