Celebrating Chinese New Year – The Year of the Horse

Last week, our students joyfully celebrated Chinese New Year, welcoming the Year of the Horse with creativity, teamwork, and cultural learning. As part of the celebrations, students explored a traditional Chinese folk game by making their own jiànzi (shuttlecocks).

During their Chinese classes, students carefully constructed their colourful shuttlecocks using plastic ropes and rubber bases. Once completed, they learned how to play the game—a fun and energetic activity that involves keeping the shuttlecock in the air using only feet, knees, and other parts of the body (but not hands!).

The classrooms and outdoor spaces were filled with laughter as students practised new techniques and discovered the skill and coordination required for this centuries-old game.

This hands-on experience deepened students’ understanding of Chinese culture and sparked their enthusiasm for learning the Chinese language.

Wish everyone a wonderful Year of the Horse—may it be full of energy, joy, and new achievements!
