Service Hours As A Youth Leader

Madeleine Lord.
Over the summer holidays I volunteered to be a Youth Leader at the annual Type 1 Diabetes Youth Camp. This is a four day, three night camp for young diabetics aged 9-12 and was something I looked forward to every year when I was that age. It’s a great chance for the kids to meet people who are dealing with the same life-changing disease as themselves. As a Youth Leader, I supervised the children in their activities, took part in the activities with them and was there to chat with them and give advice. The main job of a Youth Leader is to show the younger children that having diabetes does not have to limit you in life in any way. When I was younger I always looked up to my Youth Leaders and admired them, valuing any advice they had. Being able to give back and provide the same experience that I received, whether they’ve had diabetes their entire lives or were diagnosed only 6 weeks before the camp, was an absolute privilege.
