Careers in Health encompass a wide range of different occupations, focused on maintaining and promoting our wellbeing. Due to the vast number of options for students trying to pursue a career in the health field, there is considerable confusion regarding which to choose. For the Year 11 Health Students, the opportunity to get an in-depth perspective on various fields, in the health industry, rose on Wednesday 7th providing realistic insight on the realities of each distinct career.
Five different speakers, amongst them nurses, biomedical engineers, surgeons, dietitians and our own school counsellor shared their experiences in their respective fields, including their learning pathways, training periods and personal advice. After each speech, students were eager to ask more questions, and were able to grasp a full understanding of what it is like to work in the healthcare field and how each career can lead to places all over the world.
Encouraging students to follow a career path in Healthcare, the speakers also highlighted how their hard work channeled towards one goal – the wellbeing of others. By sharing their inspiring stories, it was evident that careers in health promote service and are rooted in the passion of helping others.
Events like this are crucial since they allow students to make informed decisions when choosing what they want to do in the future. It also relieves the stress of students when it comes to making these decisions. If there’s one thing that we learnt from the conference, it was that career pathways aren’t linear, people change degrees midway, travel to different countries, and even take gap years! A huge takeaway from each speech was that things won’t always go as planned – and that’s perfectly okay.
All the Y11 Health Students are deeply grateful to all of the speakers that took the time of their day to share their stories, which undoubtedly left an imprint in each of us. A special thanks to Mrs Peek who made this event possible and dedicated herself towards mentoring the students to Health related careers.
With the world constantly evolving, passionate and dedicated workers in the healthcare industry is more vital than ever. The Year 11 Health Conference ignited a spark that may lead to the next generation’s life-changers. Students are the future of our society, and as said in the International Youth Day, “The youth are the architects of tomorrow’s world.” As the next generation, we are the change.
