Moments from the Past Weeks

Year 12 Work Experience

On 4th–5th June, all Year 12 students took part in Carmel College’s two-day Work Experience Programme. This valuable opportunity allowed students to gain firsthand insight into a wide range of industries, workplaces, and career pathways, helping them make informed decisions about their future study and employment options.

We are incredibly grateful to the many businesses, organisations, parents, and members of our wider community who generously hosted our students and shared their time, knowledge, and expertise. Thank you for helping make this experience both meaningful and inspiring for our young women.

For my work experience, I had the privilege of shadowing Biddie Cooksley, the owner of her clothing brand, Tuesday Label. She meticulously designs clothing lines sold both online and in her store located on Ponsonby Road. This experience not only taught me interesting lessons regarding fashion, but I also learnt skills related to running a business such as stocktakes, online orders and more. I had an amazing time being in store and learning about the fashion industry, especially the business aspect of it all. The most interesting part of my time at Tuesday Label was designing window displays as it taught me about complimenting colours, silhouettes, and that clothing can tell a story.

Thank you so incredibly much to Biddie Cooksley and the team at Tuesday Label for offering me this opportunity. This valuable experience has taught me important lessons I won’t ever forget.

For my Year 12 work experience, I spent time at NZME’s Coast radio station, where I shadowed Toni, Jason, and Sam. With a 5:30AM start, I got to experience what goes into producing a live breakfast show and see the radio industry from a different perspective. During my time there, I watched Toni rehearse for her presentation at the New Zealand Radio and Podcast Awards and sat in on the filming of one of her podcasts. I also had the opportunity to see how radio content is edited and learn more about the work that happens behind the scenes. It was a really enjoyable, valuable, and fun experience! I’m extremely grateful to the Coast team for taking the time to share their knowledge and give me an insight into the world of radio and media.

For my work experience, I spent a day at Anglesea Hospital in Hamilton with my aunt, who works as a Post-Anesthetic Care Unit (PACU) nurse. This meant I was able to see exactly what she does while caring for patients as they wake up after surgery and helping to monitor their recovery.

During the day, I wore black scrubs and had the opportunity to observe many different areas of nursing, including ward nursing. One of the highlights was being given consent by a patient to observe their surgery through a viewing window. This allowed me to see not only the operation itself, but also the important role nurses play before, during, and after surgery.

The experience gave me a much better understanding of the different aspects of nursing and the teamwork involved in caring for patients. It was a lovely experience, and I am very grateful to the staff at Anglesea Hospital for making me feel so welcome and allowing me to learn so much.

International Party at Rosmini College

Last Friday evening, Rosmini College hosted an International Party that brought together international students from several Catholic schools across Auckland. Students from Carmel, Sacred Heart, Baradene, St Mary’s, Marist and Rosmini attended the event.

The purpose of the gathering was to provide international students with the opportunity to meet other international students from different schools, make new friends and build connections within the wider international student community.

The evening was filled with fun activities and entertainment. Carmel College representatives helped organise and run an exciting Kahoot quiz, which encouraged students to work together and interact with new people. A DJ kept the energy high throughout the event, which gathered all the students together to dance.

The International Party was a great success, creating a welcoming environment where students could socialise, share experiences, form new friendships and create core memories that they will always remember. We would like to thank Rosmini College for hosting such an enjoyable event!
