Maia Week and Pink Shirt Day

Get ready, Carmel College!

Next week, 12th to 16th May, we’re celebrating our annual Māia Week and Pink Shirt Day!

Māia, meaning Courage in Te Reo Māori, is one of our Core Mercy values here at Carmel. This week is all about being brave and courageous to stand up for bullying, as well as to promote kindness and inclusion throughout our school! Together, we’re building an environment where every girl feels safe, accepted, and empowered to be herself.

We’ve got an amazing lineup of Atawhai activities planned throughout the week, building up to Friday where we have our much-loved Pink Shirt Day!

So what’s Pink Shirt Day all about? It began when a young boy was bullied for wearing pink — but two classmates had his back, wearing pink the next day in a powerful act of solidarity. From that moment, a global movement was born! The message is clear:

“Speak up. Stand together. Stop bullying.”

On Friday, 16th May wear your brightest pink shirt and bring a gold coin donation to support the cause.  In addition we will have a range of lunchtime stalls including; brownies, sausage sizzle and games — so don’t forget to bring some extra cash to join in the fun! All proceeds go to the Mental Health Foundation, supporting their incredible work in creating a safer, kinder world.

Kōrero Mai, Kōrero Atu, Mauri Tū, Mauri Ora.
Speak up, speak out — stand strong, stop bullying!

Let’s make it a week to remember!
