Last Wednesday our newly formatted Mihi Whakatau (informal Powhiri) resembled an outdoor concert on the field. It was a different look and feel for our Carmel College community. Family members were not permitted in the school grounds, no Hariru (Hongi) took place and masks were worn at all times. These were among some of the strict protocols on our staff and students this year.

Our ceremony started with Karakia by Emjay Dickson, Tu Wahine and Kate Wyllie, Head of Special Character, followed closely by Matua Maurice formally welcoming new staff and students. Head Girl and Year 13 Te Reo Maori student, Lina Jang, also joined Matua to welcome our new students with her own whai korero (speech). Speaking on behalf of our Manuhiri (guests) was our new junior Te Reo Maori teacher, Ms Kelly Watts. We rounded off our Mihi Whakatau with Ms Allen addressing the school.

We are continuing to develop our own form of Mihi Whakatau to welcome new staff and students every year and this year’s version is one many staff and students can be proud of. Thanks to the team who helped make this a success with special thanks to Mr Atkinson and Mr Child.
