The North Island Middle School Ethics Olympiad Competition

Ethics Olympiad provides students an opportunity to develop skills, communication, critical, thinking and respectful discourse through the answering of Ethical Questions. During the Olympiad, teams verse each other in heats, and win by providing the best points to aid their argument. The North Island Middle School Ethics Olympiad Competition was held on the 25th of November, and this year Carmel was able to put forth a team of five. The team which consisted of Annie Liu, Koyemi Banerjee, Anushka Gonsalves, Caitlyn Theron and Cristal Cheng spent many lunchtimes developing ideas around the eight ethical issues and understanding the ethical dilemmas, including cases about Tradition vs Animal Welfare, the use of AI in Classrooms and the effect of Bullying and it’s impacts.

Their hard work and determination towards the Ethicals Olympiad was reflected on the day, where from nine till three, the girls used everything they had learnt to state their position, explain it and answer questions from the judges in order to present their ideas on the cases. Their results at the end of this day showed just how much their work paid off and the Carmel Team was recognised as the most improved team, and even had an honourable mention. Overall the day was a huge success for the Carmel Team, and the girls are even more excited for next year when they can compete again.
