From 10-24 January, we had the opportunity to attend the Rotary National Science and Technology Forum. Along with 166 other students across New Zealand, we experienced ‘university life’ while living at O’Rorke Hall and attended 12 academic modules at Massey University, the University of Auckland and AUT.
The academic modules consisted of Bioengineering, Biological Science, Biomedical Science, Chemistry, Physics, Robotics, Built Environment Science, Sports Science, Applied Maths, Digital Construction, Nutrition and Psychology. We took part in hands-on activities such as dissecting sheep hearts and mussels, programming robots and conducting a variety of experiments. We also participated in an Innovation Design Challenge which allowed us to get creative as we designed solutions for real-world problems. In addition, we had technical visits to NZ Police, Liggins Institute, Fisher and Paykel Healthcare and many more.
Alongside the academic programme were recreational activities including rock climbing, laser tag, a disco and the annual volleyball competition. Arriving at the Forum was nerve wracking at first, but we were soon surrounded with like-minded peers who all shared the same interests. Two weeks at the Forum flew by so fast, becoming the highlight of our summer! We met so many incredible individuals, formed lifelong friendships and created unforgettable memories.
