Immunisation Update for 2026
Health New Zealand has introduced a new “dual delivery” model for school immunisations.
This means that from 2026, Year 7 students will be offered both the Boostrix and HPV vaccines at the same time, rather than receiving them across two different years.
In 2026 (transition year):
Year 7 students will be offered:
- Boostrix (protecting against tetanus, diphtheria and whooping cough)
- HPV vaccine (protecting against human papillomavirus)
These vaccines will be offered together during the school-based immunisation visit.
Year 8 students will be offered:
- HPV vaccine, as they were not offered this in 2025.
From 2027 Onwards
- All Year 7 students will be offered both Boostrix and HPV vaccines.
- Any Year 8 students who missed their Year 7 immunisations will have another opportunity to receive them.
Parents and caregivers will receive full information and consent forms prior to immunisation visits. Participation remains optional.
Meningococcal Vaccine Reminder
Students aged 13–25 years entering close-living situations (e.g. boarding hostels or tertiary halls) are eligible for two free meningococcal vaccines.
These can be accessed through your GP, hauora provider, or selected pharmacies.
