We are incredibly proud of Selafina Lemeki, whose artwork was selected for the 2026 Ringa Toi Exhibition, an annual national exhibition showcasing the creativity and talent of secondary school students from across Aotearoa, with a particular focus on Toi Māori and Pacific Arts at Excellence level.

Selafina’s four-part digital artwork is inspired by the Te Whare Tapa Whā model of hauora, exploring the different dimensions of wellbeing through her own creative lens. Her connection with this concept began several years ago when she created a set of artworks based on Te Whare Tapa Whā, which are proudly displayed in Carmel’s Health Education classrooms.

At the Ringa Toi opening night, Selafina’s work received a fantastic response, with fellow student artists, whānau and industry professionals taking the time to admire her artwork and discuss her techniques and creative vision. Among those who stopped to chat were an illustrator, digital artist, graphic designer and photographer — an experience that provided a wonderful boost to Selafina’s confidence.

For Selafina, one of the highlights was being guided through the exhibition and seeing the incredible range of work on display. “Surrounded by various intricate designs, I was in complete awe. Each one clearly weaved glimpses of the artists’ perspectives with their techniques.” She also valued the opportunity to connect with other artists and creative professionals, and to see people from different backgrounds engage with her own work. “Seeing strangers, fellow peers, or professionals in the field acknowledge and appreciate my piece made me realise the significance of the exhibition itself. The world is enormous. So many people with so many unique stories… then transforming their experiences and cultural differences into a visual art piece. It’s a beautiful thing, really.”

The experience has already inspired Selafina to continue developing her creative practice. Having focused on digital art for this exhibition and worked to a tight deadline, she is now looking forward to exploring new themes, experimenting with different mediums and taking on new creative challenges.

Reflecting on the opportunity, Selafina says she is grateful to have been part of the exhibition and to have had the chance to share her work alongside so many talented young artists.
