We are delighted to share some fantastic news with our school community

Year 10 student Annabelle Smith has been selected as one of 12 national finalists in the Kaitiaki2Share Competition 2026 for her outstanding story, Toby’s Awakening.

This year’s competition invited students across Aotearoa to respond to the theme: “Answer the Call – Be a Kaitiaki of Creation.” The response was overwhelming, with 132 entries representing 240 students nationwide. Standout submissions required exceptional creativity, deep thoughtfulness, and a genuine passion for environmental stewardship.

The judging panel praised Toby’s Awakening for effectively capturing what it truly means to be a kaitiaki (guardian) and for inspiring others to care for our world. Being named a top finalist out of so many entries from across the country is an impressive achievement, and we could not be prouder of Annabelle’s effort and imagination.

Recognition and Next Steps

To honour this accomplishment:

• A Tree Planted in Her Name: A native tree will be planted in Annabelle’s name to contribute directly to the care of Creation.
• Certificates of Achievement: Annabelle will receive both a digital certificate to share with her whānau and a physical certificate that will be presented at school.
• Caritas Showcase: The Caritas website has published 2026 winners and finalists, featuring Annabelle, her creative concept, and Carmel College.

Annabelle’s work serves as a wonderful example of how we can all step up, take action, and lead by example within our school, whānau, parish, and wider community.
