Year 10 Careers Day
Our Year 10 students participated in their careers day on Tuesday 17 June. They started the day with a Guess the Guest event. Students engaged in a Q+A session to try and guess the occupations of the panelists before listening to more detailed talks from each.
A Carmel Challenge activity followed where they competed in teams to complete a range of challenges that indicated their skill and subject strengths. They also completed research tasks looking at the new Careers NZ website Tahatu Navigator, Careers Central and then a subject selection task looking into our Year 11 – 13 subject options.

“For my work experience, I had the amazing opportunity to shadow Dr. Haruna Suzuki-Kerr, a research fellow at the University of Auckland. She works on research projects exploring the pathological mechanisms behind hearing loss and the development of new therapies for inner ear diseases. This experience took me out of the normal classroom setting and into a professional research environment where I met other researchers and performed hands-on experiments in the lab that I typically wouldn’t be able to do in high school. I really enjoyed learning from the team, asking questions, and seeing how science is applied in real life. It opened my eyes to the possibilities of a career in biomedical research.
A huge thank you to Dr. Suzuki-Kerr for making it such an exciting and informative experience. An opportunity that I will never forget.”
