Moments from the Past Weeks

Auckland Mathex Competition

On the 19th of August, two teams of Year 9 students and two teams of Year 10 students travelled to Barfoot & Thompson Stadium to represent Carmel at the Auckland Mathex Competition. The competition brought together schools from across Auckland, allowing students to challenge themselves in a fast-paced and exciting maths environment.

Throughout the competition, students worked together to solve a range of challenging mathematical problems. Teamwork and quick thinking were especially important, as students had to work under pressure and find the correct answers. It was a great opportunity for students to put their mathematical skills into practice while also learning from the experience of competing against other schools.

Overall, I think that Mathex was a rewarding experience for everyone involved. I have done it every year that Carmel offers (Year 7 to Year 10). I think we all showed determination, teamwork, and resilience throughout the event and represented Carmel with pride. I am incredibly proud of all four teams for stepping outside their comfort zones, challenging themselves, and giving their best effort. I hope everyone is proud of what they got.

Level 3 Geography

Wrapping up what has been a very busy term for the Geographers, the L3 class visited Muriwai to collect data for their research internal assessment.  At different locations, the students measured longshore drift, beach profiles and the sand dunes.  Luckily the weather played ball and we had a great day.  A big thank you to Miles Palmer for joining us.
The Geography Scholarship students have been studying this year’s topic: Emerging global challenges and potential solutions and they had their third and final lecture at the University of Auckland which was on Disaster Displacement.  The other two covered this year included Biodiversity Loss in New Zealand and a global look at the Future of Food.  We wish them every success in their end of year exam.

2026 University of Otago Junior Mathematics Competition

This year 45 students sat the The University of Otago Junior Maths Competition which was held in two parts. Students who did well in Part 1 were selected to sit Part 2 of the competition. Congratulations to the following girls who achieved excellent results:

Carmel Kapa Haka Takes the Stage

On Tuesday 1 September, our Year 7&8 Kapa Haka performed at the North Shore Catholic Schools Kapa Haka Showcase at Rosmini College. Seven schools performed for each other in a heartwarming celebration of Kapa Haka and community.
Matua Manuel Beazley, vicar for Māori in the Auckland diocese, kept everyone entertained between groups. Year 12 Carmel College students, Ana Talilotu and Bianca Adelinger Smith, emceed the event. Here are Ana’s reflections on the day:
“It was an honour hosting the North Shore Catholic Schools Kapa Haka Showcase. It was so amazing to see all these young rōpū and tamariki come together and show off their talents. A huge thank you to Carmel’s Kapa Haka group for representing our school with pride and being good role models for the younger students. I had so much fun hosting this Kapa Haka event and really hope that Carmel continues to participate in it.”
